We give grants to programs and projects that promote the economic advancement, stability, and well-being of people in New Jersey.
Our approach is studied and strategic. We invite nonprofits that share our mission and values to apply for support. We rigorously vet each applicant and invest in those that offer effective solutions or innovative responses to urgent problems. We partner with our grantees to help them achieve success, measure and review their outcomes, and advocate for the causes they address.
We have three initiatives that we focus our grants, research, and advocacy on:
Women’s Economic Empowerment
Women United in Philanthropy, founded in 2005, is the first women’s giving circle in New Jersey. Members contribute $1,000 or more annually to the circle’s pooled grant fund, and vote to award large impact grants that help local women in need. While our members are from many different walks of life, our purpose is shared: To help lift the women in our community from poverty and economic insecurity to stability, independence, and economic security.
Hunger and Food Insecurity
Action Against Hunger was launched in 1991 as a food drive to help fill the shelves of food pantries in Northern New Jersey. After 28 years, it grew into the largest one-day food drive in the Metropolitan area, serving over 65 pantries and 40,000 families in Bergen, Passaic, Morris, and Essex counties each year. Today, Action Against Hunger provides financial support to organizations that feed people and work toward solutions to address food insecurity.
Disaster and Crisis Support
The Compassion Fund was established in 2001 following September 11th, from an outpouring of support for New Jersey families impacted by the tragedy. It provided over a half-million in support to victims and families. Today, The Compassion Fund provides help during times of natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy or community crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. Our goal is to provide help quickly, when and where it is most critically needed.
